We truly strive to be allies of education, after the success of AMES by MWT; Friends of Education has taken on a number of initiatives to increase the number of school-going children in the province of Sindh. The problem Sindh faces most is that of “Ghost Schools”, where children seem to be enrolled and teachers employed on paper, but the school remains physically empty. Other major problems include child-school retention and the efficiency of the teaching staff.
1st chapter – Ali Model English School
We truly strive to be allies of education, after the success of AMES by MWT; Friends of Education has taken on a number of initiatives to increase the number of school-going children in the province of Sindh. The problem Sindh faces most is that of “Ghost Schools”, where children seem to be enrolled empty. Other major problems include child-school retention and the and teachers employed on paper, but the school remains physically efficiency of the teaching staff.
The school progresses and in the next few years become the leading school in the area and now we have more than 465 students and more than 25 well trained and educated teachers. We have Science, Computer and Children Libraries. Any school’s performance is judged by the educational performance of the students in their exams. In 2016 more than 75% scored A+/A and in 2017 86% scored A+/A and it is due to the hard work of teachers/students and above all by Maham Haider our Senior Management Lead.
2nd chapter – ADOPT A SCHOOL – GHOST SCHOOLS
There are more than 600 schools in Karachi alone considered as Ghost Schools although Govt of Sind is working to improve the educational system. These schools have enrolled teachers and students but there are fewer students than enrolled. It is huge burden on Sind Govt because education standards are deteriorating despite spending a huge amount on education. They formed SIND EDUCATION FOUNDATION to facilitate adoption by a 3rd party.
1 – We adopted the 1st school in Korangi – Awami Colony called Mohammadi Masjid Govt Primary School. There were only 12 students when adopted and now have more than 80 students. The entire adoption was covered by media – 92TV and ARY Digital.
2 – We have applied for 2 more schools one on Korangi and another Orangi and they are in the process of approval. Both are GOVT GIRLS PRIMARY SCHOOL one with more than 180 students and another with 75 students.
3rd chapter – Abdul Sattar Edhi School – NOR GOTH near Thatta
The school was made with the help of PMA-UKMD after flood hit Sind but our last few years but it was running as per the desire and therefore FRIENDS OF EDUCATION adopted the school and made dramatic changes to improve the educational standards and also start providing FREE LUNCH to students due to malnutrition on the suggestions/recommendations of a Nutritionist.
4th chapter – ALI MODEL SCHOOL, ADHAM SULTAN KHAIRPUR
This is a village about 12 km from Khiarpur with no school, clean water and light. Friends of Education / Masomeen Welfare Trust decided to collaborate with local elders and to promote education among the children how never went to school before. It was our first experience in starting school in a village but education is the only obstacle in acquiring/improving quality of life. They were drinking water which is highly contaminated with bacteria – AKUH report attached. Light is available for 5 – 6 hour in 24, was a nightmare and therefore availability of light and water was just a miracle. FOE and MWT came forward and installed both Filter plant and Solar system to address the issue.
